“The 2021 La Fenêtre Chardonnay leads with burnt brown sugar, ripe nectarine, saltbush and sandalwood, peach and red apple skins. The wine is underscored by the scintillating acid line that we have come to know well at this address (pure, like the ringing of a bell), and it provides an interesting and effective counterpoint to the luxurious fruit profile. It’s a fantastic wine, with different angles and layers of curry leaf, pistachio husk/salted pistachio and even a handful of walnuts that provide constant entertainment. Awesome. 2021 was an interesting season in Margaret River; while it wasn’t particularly cold, it was really quite wet, and so much of the work that year was out in the vineyards. As a result of all that toil, many of the Chardonnays have turned out to be beautiful things—complex and fulsome in their way. Here is another triumph for this little family-owned estate in Margaret River.” 97 Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

“Such an attractive smoky and sulphidic nose with loads of complexity that bears inevitable comparison with sophisticated burgundy. Bone dry and really lengthy with a light creaminess and attractive smoked scent to finish. There’s a serious line of acid here – this has neatly folded edges that keep everything tucked in.” 17.5/20 Richard Hemming MW, Jancis Robinson

We firmly believe that wines that truly showcase the terroir are produced from the same hands that work the land, from a person who is in tune with and respectful of the land on which they farm. Our La Fenêtre Chardonnay is an ode to our special site. The percentage of each clone of Chardonnay that make up this wine differs from year to year, however, it is more about showcasing the clones that excelled, their fine elegance and fruit purity. Our four clones of Chardonnay are planted in two separate blocks on the Estate. Violette’s block has two plots within, the first a North South orientation, with the soil being more of a red karri loam heading down to clay and granite. The intensity of the fruit characters from this block is outstanding. The second plot an East West orientation providing higher acid retention and exhibiting a rainwater minerality. Lucas’ block is located at the back of the property, here the soil is rich clay and quartz with the granite bedrock much closer to the surface. We find that these clones have an extended ripening period, pick up the minerality from the soil and hold their natural acid very well. This elegant Chardonnay epitomises the uniqueness of our two sites. Layered white orchard fruit and citrus flesh, the fruit intensity ripples with a bright quartz like, saline minerality from the clay/quartz soils. A fine, chiselled finish with excellent persistence.
