The Petit Verdot is planted in our Home block right on the Ironstone/laterite ridge that runs in an East West direction to the back of the property. The ability of this block to showcase the earth in the resulting wine is outstanding. The topsoil varies across this block from fertile karri loam to a gravelly sandy loam, dig down 30cm and the laterite begins, rock upon rock. The physical slope coupled with the gravelly nature of this block ensure it is very free draining, small, concentrated berries are the result. The vines have a North South orientation ensuring that they get ample sunlight during the ripening period. This Petit Verdot is beautifully structured with a perfect balance between fruit, the surprisingly fine grained tannins and its lively acidity. The cool, extended ripening season yields an incredibly perfumed bouquet dominated by crushed violets, lavender and wild rose petals. Shifting beneath the floral layer is a core of bright, crunchy blue and red fruits, wild blueberry, pomegranate, and pastilles interwoven with fresh bay leaf, white pepper, and a subtle flinty, graphite like minerality.
