“Abundant floral aromatics and depth with black and blue fruits, scorched earth, mulberry bush, violets, graphite and licorice. The midweight palate has a seamlessly integrated mouthfeel and tannins. Fermented with a touch of viognier. Expressive and spicy with plenty of old-world charm.” 95/100 Ryan Montgomery, James Suckling
“It often surprises me that there isn’t more noise about the Windows Estate wines. Maybe the finest wines in Margaret River. Although you can barely buy the wines unless you’re on the mailing list/visit direct, which makes building a groundswell of hype tricky. Anyway, this Syrah is such a carefully weighted wine in a region that so often gets Shiraz/Syrah wrong. Floral and purple, it’s a wine of bright, sour boysenberry and blackberry fruit, lead pencil oak, proudly medium-bodied and reserved. It’s acid-shaped and delicate but not underripe – the weight is perfect. Light and shade. It’s a wine that toys with you, the beauty unquestionable, but also delivered with a shyness. I admire it so much, even if it remains a wine that feels like it has more that you’re just not allowed to have yet.” Best drinking: lovely now, but with such an upside promise that a few years might deliver. 18/20 Andrew Graham, Oz Wine Review
A stunning reflection of Margaret River Syrah. Its style is aromatic, rather layered and refined, finesse and elegance taking precedence over power and weight. The vines are planted in well drained loam over gravel, and maintain a finely tuned balance between rich fruit flavours and spice and peppery notes through meticulous attention to detail with regards to pruning and canopy management. Handpicked when both fruit and tannins have reached optimum ripeness, we have taken a very hands-off approach in the winemaking process. As always, the aim is to let the fruit speak for itself. A small amount of our Syrah was co-fermented with a tiny proportion of Viognier, handpicked from the Eastern most point of our Home block. The remaining Syrah was fermented with a parcel of whole bunches before the wine was carefully pressed off using our hand-operated basket press, with maturation occurring in French oak over a period of 12 months. The result is beautiful expression of a cooler climate Syrah, with lifted aromatics and elegant fruit, plum, bright cherry fruits, a myriad of spices, and subtle hints of white pepper. An incredibly versatile wine.
