“Excellent semillon, truly distinctive and of region, from the iridescent mid-yellow flecked with green to evergreen aromas of hedgerow and anise, beautifully aligned with quince, greengage, yellow plum, pimento salsa and the tatami spread of neutral oak. Yet despite the exuberance of my note, the wine is sophisticated by virtue of its tension – acid and phenolics- and subsequent restraint. Very Graves-like. A wine that creeps up on the drinker, rather than one that lays it all on the line with the first sip. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. This will age beautifully! Screw cap.” 95/100 James Suckling
Showcasing an underrated and age worthy variety. The vines reside on our Home block, planted there to take advantage of the free draining soils ensuring intensity of flavour. The Semillon is planted with a North South orientation, the fruit being shaded allowing for greater retention of minerality and natural acid. The soil consists of gravelly loam over clay and is naturally high in minerals. The pristine fruit was handpicked at first light with a natural ferment beginning spontaneously. Matured in both oak and clay vessels the finished wine reveals the high mineral content of the soil with dewy slate evident on the nose, grassy tones and citrus. Lemon verbena imbues the palate alongside honeysuckle and white florals with an oyster shell minerality and fine acid backbone ensuring the cellaring potential of this wine.
